THERE ARE SOME REFLECTIONS FROM THE LAMP IN THE PHOTO'S. Born in Victoria in 1891, he died of Pneumonia in Melbourne in 1940. He studied in Sydney with Julian Ashton, Dattilo Rubbo and J S Watkins, and became well known as a skilful painter of landscapes and street scenes, mainly in watercolour. A somewhat colourful character, he exhibited successfully in commercial galleries in the 1920s. These entrepreneurial activities did not help his professional profile in a rather stiff-collared 1920s Australia, even though his work was highly regarded.
His works have, however, gained some of the recognition they deserve. Most of these earlier paintings suffer from aging due to the way they were framed, so the middle initial has sometimes been recorded as H. He is represented in many private collections and in public galleries such as the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Castlemaine Art Gallery, and the Geelong Art Gallery.
